BANGKOK, June 8 (Xinhua) — Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, via spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat, on Monday instructed Thai workers to prepare themselves for overseas work once the global COVID-19 pandemic subsides. “Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha wants Thai labor workers to prepare themselves in terms of technical and language skills, physical fitness and paperwork so that when called upon, they will be able to travel abroad once the host country is ready for the mass intake,” said Narumon. The spokeswoman quoted Prayut as saying that Thailand is among highly demanded labor sources of global markets including China’s Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan and Israel. These markets have often lauded Thai workers’ work ethics and disciplines as well as Thailand’s successful COVID-19 control, she said. Kuwaiti Ambassador to Thailand Abdullah Jomaa Abdullah AlSharhan earlier met Prayut and expressed his wish that Thai workers who had returned to Thailand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic will return to Kuwait to assist in the construction of buildings and infrastructure. “And so hence the prime minister had instructed the Labor Ministry’s Employment Department and its private partners to prepare for Thai labor export,” said Narumon. The Thai government is set to export about 100,000 workers which can generate approximately 140 billion baht (4.45 billion U.S. dollars) national income based on the workers’ income, she said. “Thai workers who are interested in legal overseas jobs should prepare their health and skills and the government will facilitate their job placement,” Narumon said. The spokeswoman said that Thailand has been successful in containing the COVID-19 outbreak. “For the past 14 days, Thailand has not witnessed any new local COVID-19 case. Since late last month, all of the new infections were of Thai returnees from overseas.”
