Manipur, India Gangrapped Survivor Move to Supreme Court

Kathmandu: In Manipur, India, two women from the Kuki community who have experienced sexual violence have reached the Supreme Court seeking justice. A few days ago, a video of them being stripped naked and sexually assaulted in public went viral on social media.

The women who were paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur have approached the Supreme Court with a fresh petition related to the viral video of their ordeal.

The survivors have filed a separate application in connection with the FIR related to the May 4 sexual assault incident, along with their plea for protection of their identity.

The development comes as the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud-led bench is set to peruse the reply of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) today, July 31.

According to BBC Hindi, Chief Justice Dhananjay Yeshwant Chandrachud will preside over the hearing in the Supreme Court. The two affected women have filed a case against the Central and Manipur governments.

In their plea, the women have requested an impartial investigation into the incident and have also appealed to keep their identities confidential.

On May 4th, in Manipur, members of the Kuki community stripped two women naked and subjected them to sexual abuse in public. The incident was recorded on video and became viral on July 19th. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his dismay, saying, “This incident has brought shame to the 1.4 billion inhabitants of our country.”

The incident is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Indian media have reported.

Earlier,  the delegation of Opposition MPs that visited Manipur over the weekend will brief the floor leaders of the 26 parties that constitute the INDIA alliance in the Parliament building at 9:30 am. In an interview with Manoj C G, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Kumar Jha said the first step towards conflict resolution was acknowledging that there is a problem. “The problem with the Union government is that it has failed to acknowledge this. The proof of that is the Prime Minister choosing to remain silent, conspicuously silent,” he said.
