Maoist meeting: Opposition to gold smuggling probe commission, push to assist government

Kathmandu: During the ongoing central committee meeting of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center), central members have placed a demand in opposition to establish a high-level investigation commission for gold smuggling as demanded by the UML.

Earlier, deputy-secretory general Barsaman Pun had placed a demand to form a commission for the investigation into the gold smuggling allegations made against Krishna Bahadur Mahara and his son Rahul Mahara, and Pun himself.

He also mentioned that this demand is necessary as there is still suspicion and question marks hovering over the state and government authorities. Another Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma said that forming a commission is not appropriate, as it would create mistrust and suspicion among the state and government institutions.

Central member Ram Prasad Sapkota further added that there is no evidence to support the allegations against Mahara and his son, and they have not received any immunity from the police or state authorities. He stated, “There is no immunity involved, no evidence to prosecute, and the accusations only remain in media reports.

This is a matter of concern for the Maoists, and we need to find the truth and move forward resolutely. We need to break free from the original trap, and the Prime Minister has also expressed firmness for the same.” On the first day of the meeting, 18 central members praised the government’s steps against corruption and expressed their commitment to building the party’s strength based on these actions.
