Postal service should be restructured in new business model: Minister Sharma

Kathmandu, Oct.9: Minister of Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma said that the postal service should be taken to a new business model by mobilizing the existing resources to full capacity through restructuring.

While addressing the program conducted by the Department of Postal Service on the occasion of World Post Day, Minister Sharma said that the services of the postal service should be expanded as per time and development in a way that it can provide daily service delivery to the denizens.

Emphasizing that the postal service should be made modern, technologically advanced, competitive, and reliable, she said, “We have to compete in the world through smart post.”

Saying that there has been a massive reduction in the traditional delivery system of postal service with the rapid development in communication and technology, Minister Sharma, said “Postal service was developed in the past to provide communication service to citizens when there was absence of communication technology and transportation.”

In the current situation, it is necessary to restructure it according to the federal government system by connecting it with the prevailing information technology of the world.

There is a program of the government to implement the concept of “one local level, one postal office” starting from the current fiscal year itself.

Even though there is a network of service delivery throughout the country, it cannot be taken to its original service delivery purpose.

She said, “The aim of the government is to make service delivery of the postal service advanced and competitive. For that, it is equally necessary to develop the capacity of working staff along with restructuring of organization with the necessary technological advancement.”

“In this regard, I would like to inform that efforts are being made to improve the technology and physical infrastructure of postal service by coordinating among the stakeholders,” said Minister Sharma.
