Kavrepalanchowk, Nov 7: As many as 79 people lost their lives with an immoderate loss of physical assets in the incidents of floods and landslides last month.
The climatic events also rendered several people homeless. It has been more than a month since the local governments engaged their efforts in the search, rescue and relief distribution. The rehabilitation programme has not taken stride in lack of real details of the loss.
According to the District Administration Office, the local governments have not been able to provide the full details of the damage even after 40 days since the rain-induced disasters took its toll.
A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee has decided to provide cash Rs 15,000 per family and Rs 20,000 – in case of more than five members per family according to the Disaster Victims Rescue and Relief (Seventh Amendment) Standards 2077 BS, Assistant Chief District Officer Subas Poudel informed.
He said the relief and rehabilitation programme has been affected due to inability on part of the local governments to provide details of the damage.
He said details have been sought from the local governments to meet the criteria for providing Rs 50,000 for the construction of temporary houses.
Data collection is underway for rehabilitation and house construction in Panauti Municipality and Bethanchowk and Roshi Rural Municipalities located in the southern part of the worst-hit district.
These are among the 13 local governments in the district. The local residents of these areas are forced to live a difficult life due to lack of basic physical infrastructure.
Chair of Roshi rural municipality Dinesh Lama said that the collection of the details of the damage has reached the final stage. According to preliminary data, 350 houses in the rural municipality have been completely damaged due to floods and landslides.
In Panauti, 700 houses are believed to have been completely damaged. Bethanchowk rural municipality chair Bhagwan Adhikari said data of families whose houses and land have been washed away by floods and landslides is being collected.
Of the 4,400 affected households in Bethanchowk, 550 houses have been damaged. According to the preliminary information received so far in the district, around 4,000 private houses have been completely damaged and 7,000 houses partially damaged in the district.
Three dozen government buildings and a similar number of public buildings have been completely damaged. (RSS)
