Kathmandu: Two people were killed and more than 22 others, including police personnel, were injured during a demonstration organized by a pro-monarchist group. According to Joint Secretary of the Home Ministry, Chhabi Rijal, one of the deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Sabin Maharjan from Kirtipur. The protest, which took place in Tinkune, Kathmandu, saw police initially deploy tear gas, followed by rubber bullets and warning shots in the air.

In a separate incident, a journalist died after being burned in a fire set by royalists in a building in Tinkune, Kathmandu. Suresh Rajak, who had climbed to the roof of the building to capture footage for a television broadcast, succumbed to his injuries. The royalists had set fire to the nearby building following a clash with police during the demonstration. Rajak had gone missing immediately after the incident and was later found dead, having been burned, according to police reports.
Videos circulating on social media showed protesters snatching a police firearm and launching a deadly attack. The demonstrators also set fire to private homes, shops, media houses, and government property. Additionally, arson was reported at the office of the Herbs Production and Processing Company Limited in Koteshwor, and looting and vandalism occurred at the Bhatbhateni supermarket in the same area.
According to the latest police reports, the number of injured has reached 22, including both security personnel and protesters. Among the injured are Raju Shrestha, 43, from Guheshwor, Kathmandu, Karina Sahi, Pushkalraj Joshi, Rajesh Shrestha, Badri Ban, Suman Gurung, Nirajan Bam, Ombahadur Shrestha, Madhav Kadel, Shankar Tiwari, Nikhil Karki, Kumar Jung Rana, Uddhav Shrestha, Bikash Kumar Gautam, Rojan Pahari, Sujan Thapa, Santosh Bohora, Bikash Sangaula, Rudra Karki, Bishal Niroula, and Mani Sinkhada. Additionally, Senior Constable Chandra Budha of the Armed Police Force was also injured.
The royalist demonstration turned violent, resulting in vandalism and arson, with attacks also directed at security personnel.
Seven people injured in the clash with police in Tinkune on Friday during the royalist movement are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals in Kathmandu. According to available information, five are being treated at Tribhuvan Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, while two are at the National Trauma Center.
Dr. Mohan Chandra Regmi of Tribhuvan Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj stated that five of the injured, who were shot, are being treated in the emergency ward. He noted that all of them were hit by bullets below the waist and their condition is stable.
To bring the situation under control, the Home Ministry has imposed a curfew in the outer areas of the capital and deployed a large number of police personnel.
