Kathmandu: In the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda-led delegation is set to leave for New York, USA on September 16.
In New York, the representative delegation from Nepal led by Prachand will actively participate in the main programs of the United Nations, as informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sewa Lamsal, provided information to media about the preparation for the program in the United Nations, including the delegation’s list and the final arrangements to be made.
“We will participate in major UN events. Particularly, we are prepared to actively participate in about a dozen programs, including the review of our country’s progress in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), participation in the Climate Ambition Summit, financial development, and hosting a meeting as the Chair of LDCs in the leadership of the LDC,” She said.
While the Prime Minister’s representative delegation is set to leave for New York in (30 Bhadra) September 16, and participate in the UN’s programs from September 21, the specifics of which member will participate in each program will be finalized upon arrival, he provided information.
Despite the participation of the Prime Minister’s leadership delegation in New York at the United Nations General Assembly, it has not yet been determined which member will participate in which programs, as mentioned by him.
“While we will be sending officials with expertise in relevant fields to attend, we are in the process of finalizing it. The Prime Minister’s leadership delegation will be there. After the delegation list is finalized, it will be made public,” stated the spokesperson Lamsal.
Nepal is also preparing to hold a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) ministerial-level meeting in New York. In the UN, participation will be conducted at different levels during various programs. The composition of the Nepali delegation to represent the country’s interests will be according to the same.
When the 73rd session concluded in 2018, the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli participated. In 2019, during the 74th session, the then Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali participated virtually. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 75th session was conducted virtually. In that session, Oli addressed.
During the 76th session in 2021, following a change of government, former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, with Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka, attended. Then, in the 77th session of 2022, Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Bharatraj Paudyal led the delegation.
Prime Minister Prachanda will be participating in the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China, from the 6th to the 21st of Ashwin (September23-6October). During his visit, Prime Minister Prachanda is scheduled to hold high-level meetings, including a meeting with the President of China, Xi Jinping.
After the general elections, Prime Minister Prachanda, who had previously assumed office on the 10th of Paush 2079 BS embarked on official visits to India and Italy. He conducted an official visit to India from the 31 May to the 3rd June and participated in the ‘United Nations Food System Summit 2023’ held in Rome, Italy, from the last month leading Nepal’s high-level delegation.
