Reuters: Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan rejected the General Assembly resolution passed on Friday, which overwhelmingly called for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas and demanded aid access to the besieged Gaza Strip and protection of civilians.
Erdan said that the United Nations “no longer holds any legitimacy or relevance” and accused those who voted yes of preferring to support “the defense of Nazi terrorists” instead of Israel.
“This ridiculous resolution has the audacity to call for truce. The goal of this resolution truce is that Israel should cease to defend itself to Hamas, so Hamas can light us on fire,” he told the General Assembly after the vote.
Writing on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen described the resolution as “shameful” and said that Israel would continue to work to destroy Hamas, “just as the world destroyed the Nazi and Daesh.”
“Israel is opposed to a humanitarian pause or ceasefire at this time,” Lior Haiat, Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said on Friday, while a senior Israeli official said calls for a pause in fighting appeared in “poor faith.”
