For 26-year-old Smriti, life depends on dialysis

Kathmandu, Dec 23: It has been years since Smriti Magarati of Bhimdhunga, Nagarjun Municipality of Kathmandu suffered from kidney failure and she is surviving on dialysis. Smriti, 26, has to undergo dialysis thrice a week. Her mother Sabitri Magarati escorts her to the Banasthali-based National Kidney Centre for the dialysis which takes four to five hours.

Smriti cannot walk. She has been surviving on dialysis since the last 10 years.

“We do not know. Our burden would be lighter if there were anyone to share our distress with,” expressed Sabitri in desperation. According to her, the family has spent a huge amount of money by their economic standard in Smriti’s treatment.

“We have already sold the small property that we had for Smriti’s treatment. We are economically poor and our family cannot afford the expenses that are required for kidney transplantation,” Sabitri shared.

She added that on the one hand it is hard to find a donor and the family cannot afford the expenses necessary for the kidney transplantation on the other.

“My daughter wants to live longer with the help of dialysis – however long it might be. The State provides free dialysis service. But the other associated costs are huge and beyond our capacity,” Sabitri explained. By extra costs, Sabitri was referring to the cost of the regular medical tests, travel cost (it is eight kilometres travel from home to the Centre), the costs during health emergencies.

Moreover, she said, she cannot go out for work for an earning as she has to be with her daughter all the time to attend on her. Due to all these reasons, her family is facing daunting economic difficulties.

While under such desperate situation, Sabitri earnestly feels that her life’s burden would be alleviated to some extent if some Good Samaritan comes to her support.
To make matters worse, Smriti is at present suffering and bed-ridden from tuberculosis and jaundice.

Sabitri has appealed to all the Nepalis and foreigners for support in this dire situation. Anyone willing to donate to Smriti’s cause can deposit their generous contribution in her bank account (Smriti Magarati, Global IME Bank, Nagarjun Branch, Account No. 16307010014100) or contact her at mobile number 9866407666. (RSS)
